Registering a domain name for your website
Every website needs a domain name to be hosted online. Your domain name is your website address or URL on the internet that gives you an online identity or brand. It is a valuable part of your business identity and is an important marketing tool that can help customers easily find you and identify your business. For example, TA Digital’s domain name is tadigital.com.au.
You will need to check that your domain name is available before you register it. Depending on the website provider you choose to host your website, there may be other options included as part of your plan, such as email hosting and cloud storage. Once you have registered a domain, nobody else can register the same one for as long as you continue to renew it.
Email also relies on domain names to work. Once you have a domain name, it is easy to create your own email address of yourname@yourdomain.com.au. For example, info@tadigital.com.au. This has many advantages for branding and professional communications.
There are various ways to register a domain name. You can either buy a brand-new domain name from a registrar, or purchase one that’s been previously registered through a reseller. A brand-new domain will cost anywhere between $10 – $35 a year, depending on the registrar.
When picking a website domain for your business it’s best to go with a name that:
- represents your business or brand
- is easy to remember, pronounce and spell
- is short and unique.
Please note, If you want to buy a ‘.com.au’ web address, you will need to be a commercial entity and have either an Australian Company Number (ACN) or Australian Business Number (ABN).
